[Purpose| Requirements | Petition | Participant Feedback | Application: USA | Application: UK | CPM Listing]

Purpose Statement

The Mulligan Concept Teacher Association (MCTA) has recognized the need to identify physical therapists that are competent in both a didactic knowledge base and clinical/practical expertise in the Mulligan Concept. Upon successful completion of the examination process these clinicians will be recognized as Certified Mulligan Practitioner (CMP).
The purposes of recognizing such clinicians are two fold:

  1. As a referral source for clinicians and the general public seeking treatment from physical therapists who achieved a recognized level of competence in the Mulligan Concept. Physical therapists who qualify as a Certified Mulligan Practitioner (CMP) will be eligible to have their names listed on the Mulligan Web site (www.bmulligan.com).

  2. The CMP credentialing process can assist clinicians who are interested in having their knowledge base and skill competence in the Mulligan Concept evaluated by providing a peer review/examination process. It is hoped that such individuals with CMP credentials will have improved treatment outcomes.

Individuals who pass the CMP qualifying exam are NOT entitled to, nor are they recognized by the MCTA to teach the Mulligan Concept.

Requirements

Those eligible to apply for the CMP exam include: Physical Therapists, Medical Doctors, Osteopaths, and Chiropractors (note: ATC, OT, PTA, and COTA are not eligible). To be admitted to the CMP examination, applicants must have completed either of the following course sequences.

Clinical Experience with Mulligan Concept is highly recommended. It is the expectation of the Mulligan Concept Teachers Association (MCTA) that individuals who have taken the recommended course work and have clinical experience with the Mulligan Concept should to be successful with the exam process. Clinicians who have taken only the Introductory course and Follow-up and who have not used Brian Mulligan's 4th or 5th edition text as a clinical resource and guide for developing further understanding and skill in the Mulligan Concept may find the CMP credentialing exam challenging.

Petition

Cases for Petition: Applicants may petition for exemption from the basic course requirements. The MCTA recognizes that recent changes in the structure of courses offered in the Mulligan Concept may preclude some individuals from meeting the current recommended course sequence & requirements for certification (see CMP requirements). In addition the MCTA recognizes that some clinicians with advanced or postgraduate training in manual therapy may be competent in the Mulligan Concept and may petition to sit for the CMP examination. It is required that individuals who elect to obtain requirement exceptions explain in writing at the time of application to the CMP examination. Petitions should be submitted with the CMP application 8 weeks prior to the examination date. Applicants will be notified if their petition is accepted within 2 weeks of receiving the petition. Should a petition be rejected the applicant will have their application fee returned.
